Videos documenting my exploration of forging swords and knives. While I am mostly interested in Anglo-Saxon and Viking-age types swords at the moment, I hope to branch out to other cultures, too. As time permits. I try to narrate my videos to make them easy to understand independent of background.
Forging A Woodworking Holdfast
In this episode, I making a simple holdfast for a woodworking friend. The holdfast is quickly forged from 1045 round bar. I heat treat and temper it before showing a quick action shot of the hold fast holding on to a piece of 2 by 4 that I try to saw from a disadvantageous position. Enjoy.

Power Hamme Repair: Bullhammer 75 valve replacement
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.2 года назад
My trusty power hammer, a Bullhammer 75, stopped working. I needed to diagnose and repair. Follow along with my tribulations and challenges. This may have a happy ending or not. Working with pneumatic assemblies is not something I have any experience with. That said as a blacksmith, even as a beginner blacksmith, the ethos is to figure things out yourself. So, I learn about two piece ball valve...
Forging and Making a Handled Butcher
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.2 года назад
I forge and make a new tool: a handled butcher. The butcher assists with creating clear transitions in metal and I plan on using it for an axe forging project. I show how to turn a round bar into a very pretty butcher and then also show my method for taking hard wood and turning it into a handle that I will attach to the butcher. Lots of clever little tricks to learn here. If you are interested...

Metal Dust Collection for Sword and Knife Makers: Complete Construction - DIY?
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.3 года назад
As a blacksmith and knife maker, forging knives, swords or even axes will eventually lead to a 2x72 band sander which generates a lot of metal dust. Not only are the sparks hot and can cause smoldering fires, they also end up covering all surfaces in the shop. The solution is a metal dust collector made from metal for metal. I explain how I make it and future videos on forging swords will happi...
Making Mandalorian Beskar Steel/Ingot (Giveaway for Subscribers)
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 года назад
To change it up a little for 2021, I made a Mandalorian Beskar ingot using pattern welding techniques. As you know from the Mandalorian show, Mandalorian Beskar Steel is the super strong material from which the Mandalorian Armor is made. While such material may not exist in the real world, the pictures we see in the show look similar to pattern-welded steel. If you are new here, the techniques ...

Making a Metal Dust Collector: Part 5 - Ready for action (2.5K HDR)
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
When making swords, most of the time is spent in front of the grinder. Grinding generates a lot of metal dust and that dust gets everywhere. Unfortunately, dust collection for metal dust is quite tricky. The sparks from grinding can create smoldering fires, and finely ground high-carbon steel burns surprisingly well. It's time to make my own metal dust collector. In part 5, I am completing the ...

Making a Kitchen Knife: Integral Bolster from Round Bar (Knife Making)
Просмотров 26 тыс.4 года назад
This project turns a round steel bar into a kitchen knife with an integral bolster and a wide blade. This is a good example of the transformative nature of blacksmithing to turn steel into completely different shapes just using a forge, hammer and anvil. I will take you through all the necessary steps and provide detailed narration. The knife making skills shown here are fairly straight forward...

Making Dies for the Blacksmith Helper (Tools and Process Ep. 3)
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
I was going to make a video on forging a kitchen knife with integral bolsters but realized that I did not have all the right tools at the shop. I missed a special die for blacksmith helper. Tools used: Metal saw, belt sander and files, ...
Forging Box Jaw Blacksmithing Tongs (Tools & Process, Ep. 2)

I am forging box jaw blacksmithing tongs using only minimal tools. This is only tangentially related to swordsmithing but I like to use box jaw tongs for holding on the tongs of knives and swords, especially when heat treating. This would be a good blacksmithing for beginners project. In fact, forging tongs was one of the very early skills I learned. Materials: 2x 16in long bar of 3/4in x 1/2in...
Forging a Viking Broad Sword: from start to finish - Swordsmithing! (Broad Seax)
Просмотров 159 тыс.4 года назад
I started making this sword in 2017 and now it's finally complete. This video will show how to make a viking broad sword or viking seax since it's a single edged sword in this case. The seax was a weapon common during Anglo-Saxon times but was also in use during the early Viking-age. While mostly a simple weapon produced locally by many blacksmiths, more elaborate pattern-welded seaxes have bee...

Forging A Viking Broad Seax: Analzying Failures (Breitsax Ep. 4)
Hi Niels, Im a year into my journey as a smith and I was wondering what you suggest for tempering. I know knowing the steel I am smithing indicates the temperature and color is essential for thermocycling, but I'm having a hard time finding either an oven to buy for the size of my projects (4 feet maximum) or a blueprint to follow for an accurate thermocycling oven, any suggestions? Love the video!
You can build them yourself if you have some experience with electronics. I believe the individual parts are all sold. I bought a long evenheat oven and have been happy with it. Smaller items easily fit in your kitchen oven.
best
Cant believe this is almost 10 years old
Time flies 🤪
I've been trying to find what that push-stick is for the past 20 minutes. It looks perfectly grippy + the guideline!
I think it’s delrin or a plastic like it.
Thats not beskar. Sparkling wine that is not made in the champayne valley is closer to being champayne than your folded iron alloy is to being beskar.
Are you sure about 5/7" (8mm)? I think it was more likely 5/8" (16mm) to fit in 20mm hole. The bar doesn't look that thin.
It for sure was not 5/7”. That’s not a size of steel you could get easily get here. Thanks for pointing that out.
Niels, wonderful work. I think that gate is fantastic.
Thank you.
Who else got here by being curious about how metal is made?
i have to say thats really amazing with how little flux you use per i understand the need for flux but usually you see such large clumps but its really refreshing to see this level of skill
Thank you. That’s really kind of you to say. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
thankyou very much, this is so helpful
Glad to hear it. Were you able to try it ?
@@NielsProvos yes!! With good results
@@rohlanrocktracker3720 that’s awesome. I am glad to hear it.
That is 1 happy Beautiful doggy 🐕.....
Dump Trump. Very, very nice touch. I want you to know-I got your message.
Do you have a sales page for items you forged?
Sorry. I don’t sell my work.
Beautiful work I miss my forge .
I have not been able to find time myself recently as well 😢
Wasn't boring at all. I enjoyed learning your process.
So good
Good work
Can you share where you were able to purchase all that wrought iron? I understand they stopped making it in the US in the 70s.
What kind of quenchant are you using for this project?
I like to use Parks 50.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it. Will you make one too?
I like the music but I would also like to be able to hear what the narrator is saying.
Very nice
Why don't you look at the crucible structure of the indians, you can easily find this on the internet.
The charcoal dust clogs the air flow. Like when you empty a bag of BBQ brickettes
The cost of the ITC 100 is surprisingly high.
It probably has become more expensive. I have not been using it any more since it doesn't really make a meaningful difference over time.
Thanks.@@NielsProvos
Thank you for this. Fascinating and beautiful work.
thats beautiful seax, you are awesome bladesmith Niels
Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Pachel bell cannon in d, last song I expected for a knife build. Love it. :)
Glad you liked it!
That is a really intelligent way of forming that die. Thanks!
Glad you liked it.
My kid was a huge fan of your work. Thanks for being so precise
My pleasure. I hope your kid is inspired to start the journey.
Klasse!
Quick question, What are you spraying on the iron before you weld it? Very nice work.
It’s an anti weld spatter spray. Less cleanup.
I love your Makita collection
Fantastic work! …though it seems you were a bit camera-shy with the end result.
It’s hard to film the pattern in natural light and I don’t really want to feature myself too much in these videos 😉
Wonderful video and amazing looking final result!
Thank you very much!
This video literally ROCKED OUT, DUDE. *head bangin while learning about damascus billeting.*
The wood handle came out lovely! The imperfections make the look of the blade, instead of detecting from it.
Thank you very much!
Did the band ever make it?
I used the techniques from your video (& Tjorban’s) to forge my first flatter-fuller for my power hammer. I am very happy with it and I’m sure it will be in use long after I am gone. Thanks!
Great to hear! That’s awesome.
Nice work!
AWESOME SWORD
Realy exciting!
What kind of belt were you using for the end step polishing of the blade i couldnt quite catch it... praying u see this 2 years later
Probably Trizac A65
I really like how you narrate your videos with eloquent statements packed with knowledge. Thank you
Hello. It is a great video. Could you please give me the composition for making this kind of materials please. I also want to make it by myself. Thank you very much!
Each of the videos has the mixture I am using in the audio. Look at the first three ones in the series.
It was like baby delivery
